Wallpaper: Is it making a come back?

I’ve been hearing recently that wallpaper is making a comeback. I’m wondering if the wallpaper industry is spreading this rumor, because I’m not personally seeing this “comeback” in my residential design practice. I realize that my perspective is limited by my own clients and professional experiences, but if you want our scoop, we tear it down, we don’t put it up.

Consider this: I prefer faux finishing or murals to wallpaper because of the custom, one-of-a-kind look. Another upside is it doesn’t cost a fortune to remove once you’re tired of it. That said, wallpaper has some uses. There are great quality wallpapers available that provide durability and interest to the walls. It’s a practical approach to commercial interior design in hallways, offices and other public spaces. But if considering wallpaper for your own home, I have some caveats. Keep it limited to small areas of your home such as powder rooms or above or below a chair rail, which can be taken down with ease.

Ceiling White – It’s Passé

As I passed through the paint aisle at a local home center store the other day, I noticed white flat-finish paint with the label “ceiling white” on sale. I thought to myself, Why do so many people think ceilings have to be white? Where did this concept of white ceilings start? One possible reason I can think of for the marketing of “ceiling white” was the sure-fire maximizing of light in a room no matter what color the walls. When it’s a no-brainer to pick white for a ceiling, it’s one less color decision to be made. But contrary to popular belief, white does not go with everything. Why add confusion to your color palette?

Consider this: Treat your ceiling as if it is another wall. If you don’t want to notice it, paint it the same color as the walls. If you want a light and airy feel, paint it two to three shades lighter than the walls. If you want a dramatic effect, try a darker color for a rich look. Take it a step further and add a soft faux finish.

But, give your ceilings the same love and attention as you do the walls…and, please, anything but white!
